Hero’s Last Action Plants More Anti-Immigrant Seeds into Americans Soiled

Governor Schwarzenegger’s Overtime Veto Terminates Worker’s Hopes!
There aren’t many Americans throughout this great country who have not enjoyed the heroic antics of one of its greatest super star heroes, Arnold Schwarzenegger. His Terminator movies are legend and his fans are legion. Audiences throughout the world have loved his on screen antics for the last three decades, while some critics have panned his acting abilities. Big deal! Heroes don’t have to know how to act, they just have to kick bad guys’ butts.
As California’s current Governor, he has received mixed reviews from both sides of the aisle, but his veto of the “Overtime Bill” for farm laborers may have sullied his image forever. You see, politicians can make many bad decisions, as they often do, based on how they will affect his re-election. But Arnold is not running for another term; thereby, even as a lame duck Governor, he could have endeared himself to the world for coming to the rescue of yet another one of society’s victims. That’s what Arnold is best known for, protecting, rescuing and defending victims.
Yes! Farm workers are victims of a system and process that has used and abused those hard-working souls over a century. We bring them in to do menial labor when we need it the most and then ship them back after the job is done. These are they who helped make America's agriculture community the strongest and most productive conglomerate in the world. They stoop over all day long in the sweltering heat to pick the fruits and vegetables we put before our family tables on a daily basis. People can rant all they want to about “Illegal Aliens” and how they are a drain on the American tax-payers, especially how they take jobs away from needy American citizens. But, Seriously! When was the last time you saw an American picking lettuce under the hot California sun?

Schwarzenegger vetoed SB 1121 July 28, which would have given farm-workers overtime pay after 40 hours in a week, putting it on a par with other non-management jobs in California. Obviously western growers and farmers are ecstatic! The California governor told the press that federal law exempts farm workers from any overtime and only the sates of Maryland and Minnesota require growers to pay workers overtime if they exceed a weekly limit. Schwarzenegger said he believes agricultural work is different from other industries because he claims it is seasonal, subject to the unpredictability of weather conditions and requires the harvesting of perishable goods. He says increasing overtime would harm California’s agricultural businesses and make the state’s largest industry less competitive with other states. Agribusiness employs slightly over 450,000 workers in the peak harvest months of August and September.

I know the Governor and worked on the publicity when he was the Commissioner for the Los Angeles Inner-City Games and again when he was honored by a local youth group who worked with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yes, I loved his movies. We all need our heroes! However, this is one of those unique moments in history where a person could have left a lasting legacy on his career, in both movies and government. But, no, Arnold took the easy and rewarding path, as most of American society has when it comes time to do right thing by our nation’s farm-workers.
Now, you can’t complain about those folks being here illegally or the Immigration and Naturalization Services would have been out in the fields, gathering and arresting them and sending them back to Mexico as Arizona is doing today. I guess they are waiting until after September when the peak-picking season is over.
Arnold! I don’t know how other folks feel about your Last Action heroics, but frankly, your rhetoric of compassion is nothing but True Lies. You gave farm workers a Raw Deal with your decision, which is one normally made by traditional political Barbarians. Arnold, you resorted to Kindergarten Cop tactics, you have left a lot of Collateral Damage among the many in the Latino community who admired you. You will never be able to Erase the damage you have done to the farm worker spirit. But if my Total Recall is correct, The Sixth Day before the final week of life could be right around the corner. Now Arnold, no matter how much of a Running Man you may be, and maybe will even try to Jingle All The Way to your banks and retirement homes, there is a diabolical Predator coming over the horizon, and you soon may well feel Red Heat breathing down your your neck.
However, there is a Hercules-type of act that you can undertake, as any good Commando of God’s army does, you can study the following verses of scripture to help you understand what is truly God’s will for our American society and its leader members in regards to the poor, downtrodden, alien and homeless, and also to know how to prepare for the bad days ahead. Not only do they need to know this Arnold, but you, especially, in the aftermath of the decision you made that Terminated any future financial hopes for America’s farm workers.
Because, you see, Arnold, there is more to life than Pumping Iron to succeed in life. You and all of our nation’s leaders need to do things God’s way; not the way of those folks who donated money to your campaign so they could control the mantles of power. Yes Arnold, The End of Days are right around the corner, and you and those other leaders who pressured you into vetoing this bill most certainly want to be prepared for Judgment Day!
Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute, (Proverbs 31:8)
Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other, (Zechariah 7:10)
You are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born. I am the LORD your God, (Leviticus 24:22)
The community is to have the same rules for you and for the alien living among you; this is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. You and the alien shall be the same before the LORD, ( Numbers 15:15)
The same laws and regulations will apply both to you and to the alien living among you, (Numbers 15:16)
You are to allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the aliens who have settled among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel, 23 In whatever tribe the alien settles, there you are to give him his inheritance," declares the Sovereign LORD, (Ezekiel 47:22-23)
But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do, (Deuteronomy 5:14)
Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation, (Romans 4:4)
What does the worker gain from his toil? (Ecclesiastes 3:9)
Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge, (Deuteronomy 24:17)

You shall not withhold the wages of poor and needy laborers, whether other Israelites or aliens who reside in your land in one of your towns. You shall pay them their wages daily before sunset, because they are poor and their livelihood depends on them; otherwise they might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt, (Deuteronomy 24:14-15)

Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty, (James 5:4)

"So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty, (Malachi 3:5)

Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns, (Deuteronomy 24:14)

The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the alien, denying them justice, (Ezekiel 22:29)

Do not rob the poor because they are poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate; for the Lord pleads their cause and despoils of life those who despoil them, (Proverbs 22:22-23)

Father and mother are treated with contempt in you; the alien residing within you suffers extortion; the orphan and the widow are wronged in you. You have despised my holy things, and profaned my sabbaths, (Ezekiel 22:7-8)

Poverty… may befall a wise man, virtuous man, a faithful man… Extreme poverty and necessity may befall the godly.… [But these] are the poor of God’s making, and our duty in respect to them, is… to pity them… comfort them… relieve them, and support them in deeds, (Proverb 30)
If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. (I John 3:17-18)

"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first, (Matthew 20:8)

For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the needy in their distress,a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat, (Isaiah 25:4)

He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing, (Deuteronomy 10:18)

If you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, 7then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your forefathers for ever and ever. 8 But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless, (Jeremiah 7:6-7)

This is what the LORD says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of his oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the alien, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, (Jeremiah 22:3)

"Cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien, the fatherless or the widow." Then all the people shall say, "Amen!" (Deuteronomy 27:19)

Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the aliens living in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law, (Deuteronomy 31:12)

  1. As usual, Brother Ortiz, you specialize in quality as well as quantity - both exhibited in this excellent treatment of the plight of agricultural workers. I noted your remarkable blending of various films featuring the Terminator before he took on the role of Governator. It's tragic that he put the selfish interests of corporations ahead of the workers who make those businesses possible - but of course that is the way the rich have always treated the poor. I was reminded of the words that the Lord directs towards the end time church of Laodicea in Revelation 3:16-17: "So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked" - reasons why the high and mighty and selfish and greedy (at the expense of the poor and needy) will most certainly be deserving of the great tribulation which will purify those who need purifying. As the old saying goes, "The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine!" And the roles will be reversed to a great extent in the end time: the rich and greedy will be abased while the Lord will never forsake the poor and humble and especially those who, out of love for Him, help the poor and humble right now! God bless you, Brother Ortiz, for personally starring in a role that will reap more lasting rewards than the movie-star-turned-governor has ever dreamed of winning! Gratefully, Ginger
